Understanding and Influencing Muscles: A Practical Workshop

This is a 2-day workshop. It can also be offered in half-day segments during the week.

Course Outline

Refining Vision – what do I miss when I see a patient? (4 hours)

  • Refine your observation of posture and muscle form to understand the connection to the patients presentation
  • Utilize the whole patient presentation to “read” the muscular system to direct appropriate assessment procedures
  • Overview of the approach to the late Czech Neurologist Prof. Vladimir Janda and current concepts

Refining my sense of Touch – Part 1 (3 hours)

  • Overview of muscle length assessment and its relationship to articular, neural and muscular function
  • Assessment of the muscle length changes to understand our influence on muscles for optimal activation

Refining my sense of Touch – Part 2 (3 hours)

  • Options for treatment of different muscle length presentations
  • Current assessment and treatment of impairments of muscle control of hip, knee, lumbar and cervical spine. Specific case presentations discussed.

Treatment: Afferent systems all go (4 – 6 hours)

  • Understand how important the afferent system is to our movement patterns and methods to facilitate improved motor control
  • Practical treatment techniques to enhance muscle activation, including innovative uses of Thera-Band
  • Practical: Fun and useful and effective home exercise programs to stimulate muscle activation and appropriate movement strategies
